Mollie Lanier Saunders (1904-2002) was a schoolteacher in her native Jenkins County before marrying and becoming a mother. Her son, Dr. R. Richard Frank Saunders, Jr. (1934-2008) was the son of Frank Saunders, Sr., & Mrs. Mollie Lanier Saunders. He lived almost his entire life in the Portal community, Bulloch County, Georgia, on Saunders Road. He taught History at Georgia Southern (of which he was an alumnus, 1957) from 1969 to 1996, after several teaching jobs at lower-level schools, including Portal High.
